Here are some site photos that will outline the pre-excavation site. Click on the photos to display a larger version. As can be seen from the photos below, there was a large deposit of rock where the addition is to be located. The second photo illustrates that the excavated area is essentially lower than the mantle. The rock and soil was used to build up the grade beside the mantle. To provide an idea of the new grade, the large tree to the very right-hand edge of the photo was cut down and the stump is now underground. As you can see in the photo below, referencing the existing site photos above, the old grade (consisting mostly of bedrock, which had to be hoe-rammed) would have come up quite high on the new wall. The top of the wall was built up from this to make the area on top more level. |
